Convince, Rebuke, Exhort

"In 2 Tim 4:2 Paul directs Timothy to 'convince, rebuke, exhort'.  'Rebuke' is addressed to the conscience, calling for reformation of behaviour that has gone astray; 'exhort' is addressed to the will, a concern to promote right conduct.  But 'convince' addresses the mind, and that comes first." - Motyer, Preaching?, p28

2 Timothy 4:2 (NKJV)

2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
